Game closing several stores
The Massmart-owned retailer announced that it close a lot of stores as part of its parent company’s recovery strategy.
He listed eight stores he plans to close, adding that six more will follow.
The eight stores that must close are:
- Bel-Air Game in Northriding, Gauteng
- CBD Gambling in Cape Town, Western Cape
- Game Gilwell in East London, Eastern Cape
- Greenstone stake in Modderfontein, Gauteng
- Hazyview game in Mpumalanga
- Game Mall of the South in South Johannesburg, Gauteng
- Ulundi game in KwaZulu-Natal
- Game Westwood Mall in Westville, KwaZulu-Natal
The move comes after the retailer launched a major store renovation project dubbed “Game Reimagined.”
The initiative helped Massmart better understand which stores were unprofitable or unviable.
Massmart told MyBroadband that it had begun Section 189 consultations with some 700 affected employees regarding the planned store closures three months ago.
“We are still in discussion with staff to finalize closure dates,” he said.
“As is always the case, we will do our best to identify opportunities for the redeployment of affected staff members within the wider Massmart group.”
To phase out some of its products, Game launched “Everything Must Go” deals at affected stores on Monday, September 12, 2022.
Game said customers can expect at least 10% off most products, with limited exclusions of up to 40% markdowns on select items.
Customers must visit stores for product-specific discounts.
